Minimum hours required for “Clinical practice/attachment”
At the 52nd MLT Board Meeting held on 5 February 2024, amendment on the minimum hours required for “Clinical practice/attachment” to be from 400 to 200 hours was endorsed. Details of clinical practice arrangement in the major four clinical areas, namely “Clinical Microbiology & Infection”, “Anatomical Pathology”, “Chemical Pathology” and “Haematology” with minimum hours of 100 each has been revised as 50 hours each.
With the reduction in clinical attachment hours, the 200 hours could be used for elective study modules (under other supporting subjects) with wider options to provide for more flexibility. Potential options include, e.g. to use for enhance clinical practice/attachment; or to provide additional training or teaching to strengthen specific area like molecular techniques; or to cover a broader range of other MLT-related subjects not currently included in the four sub-disciplines, e.g. immunology. With such design of elective study modules of 200 hours in lieu of the clinical practice/attachment, it allows for flexibility and enables continuous transition/improvement of the curriculum both in existing and new programmes.
