Registration under section 12(1)(a) of the SMPO
A person who holds the following qualifications as prescribed in section 6 of the Radiographers (Registration and Disciplinary Procedure) Regulation shall be qualified for registration as a radiographer –
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Radiography awarded by the Hong Kong Polytechnic or The Hong Kong Polytechnic University;
- A Professional Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography issued by the Hong Kong Polytechnic or The Hong Kong Polytechnic University before 1 January 1997;
- A Higher Certificate in Diagnostic Radiography issued by the Hong Kong Polytechnic or The Hong Kong Polytechnic University before 1 January 1996;
- A Certificate in Diagnostic Radiography issued by the Hong Kong Polytechnic before 1 January 1991;
- A Diploma issued by the Hong Kong Radiological Technicians Association before 1 January 1982; or
- A certificate from the Board that he has passed an examination conducted by it under section 15A of the Ordinance for the purposes of section 12(1)(a) of the Ordinance and relating to the profession of radiographers.
Registration under section 12(1)(b) of the SMPO
The assessment criteria below have taken effect on 1 February 2023. Applications submitted on or after 1 February 2023 will be processed under the assessment criteria below. The date of submission of application is taken as the postage date stamped on envelop for applications submitted by post or the date of receipt by the Central Registration Office of the Department of Health for applications submitted in person.

An applicant is eligible for registration as a radiographer under section 12(1)(b) of the Supplementary Medical Professions Ordinance if he/she meets the following requirements –
(1) Registration Status
An applicant is required to hold a current registration status with the jurisdiction in which his/her qualification was conferred before he/she is eligible for registration in Hong Kong. (Note 1)

Section I – For qualifications obtained in Australia, Canada and UK
Qualification attained should be at the level of BSc (Hons) Degree or above, and -
(i) Australia – Examinations conducted or approved by the Australian Institute of Radiography or other approving authority, leading to full accreditation by the Australian Institute of Radiography or other approving authority
(ii) Canada – Examination conducted or approved by Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists or other approving authority leading to membership of the Association in Radiography
(iii) Switzerland – Qualifications obtained (in diagnostic radiography) following the existing 3-year course of training in Switzerland; or qualifications obtained (in diagnostic radiography) following the former 2-year course of training in Switzerland, provided that after qualification applicants have completed 3 years’ full-time general clinical experience approved by the Radiographers Board or other approving authority in UK
(iv) United Kingdom – Qualifications registrablewith the Health and Care Professions Council or other approving authority

(a) with not less than 1,300hours diagnostic radiography-related clinical practicum of which 700 hours should be in general / plain film radiography; and
(b) comprise the following compulsory subject areas (Note 3)–
Anatomy – 60 contact hours
Physiology – 60 contact hours
Pathology – 40 contact hours
Radiography studies (Note 4)– 240 contact hours
Specialties studies (Note 5) – 150 contact hours
Medical informatics – 60 contact hours
Radiation protection – 35 contact hours
Physics – 60 contact hours
CT – 40 contact hours
Clinical research – 40 contact hours

Qualification attained should be comparable with current local relevant BSc (Hons) Degree –
(a) with not less than 1,300 hours therapeutic radiography-related clinical practicum; and
(b) comprise the following compulsory subject areas (Note 3)–
Anatomy – 60 contact hours
Physiology – 60 contact hours
Pathology – 40 contact hours
RT studies (Note 6) – 400 contact hours
Medical informatics – 40 contact hours
Radiation protection – 35 contact hours
Physics – 60 contact hours
Radiobiology – 25 contact hours
CT – 25 contact hours
Clinical research – 40 contact hours |

(3) Appropriate Experience
In applying for registration as a radiographer in Part II of the register, the applicant is required to provide documentary proof that he/she has obtained appropriate experience after obtaining the qualification acceptable for registration, in which –
(a) the experience is directly related to radiography (Note 7); and
(b) the minimum required duration of the above appropriate experience is 140 hours.
Note 1 - The requirement on registration status shall be exempted for applicants who have enrolled in, are studying or have been graduated from the radiography programmes before 1 April 2016. Applicants who enrol in studying theradiography programmes on or after 1 April 2016 are required to comply with this requirement.
Note 2 - The revised requirement on registrable qualifications shall be exempted for applicants who have enrolled in, are studying or have been graduated from the radiography programmes before 1 April 2016. Such applicants should attain qualifications as listed below –

(ii) Canada – Examination conducted or approved by Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT), leading to membership of the Association in Radiography;
(iii) Netherlands – Bewijs van bevoegdheid van radiodiagnostisch laborant in accordance with Dutch Government's Administration Bill 1976;
(iv) South Africa – Examinations and training conducted by Society of Radiographers of South Africa leading to National Diploma for diagnostic radiographers or qualifications in radiography granted by Universities of Pretoria and the Orange Free State, so long as these qualifications are accepted for registration by the South African Medical and Dental Council;
(v) New Zealand – New Zealand Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography;
(vi) Switzerland – Qualifications obtained (in diagnostic radiography) following the existing 3-year course of training in Switzerland; or qualifications obtained (in diagnostic radiography) following the former 2-year course of training in Switzerland, provided that after qualification applicants have completed 3 years' full-time general clinical experience approved by the Radiographers Board in UK;
(vii) United Kingdom – Diploma of the College of Radiographers (Radiography); or Member of the Society of Radiographers (Radiography); or Diploma of the Society of Radiographers (Radiography)

(a) with not less than 1,000 hours radiography-related clinical practicum of which 60% should be in plain radiography; and
(b) comprise the following compulsory subject areas –
- Anatomy, Foundation Physiology, Pathology, Radiographic Techniques (each of not less than 30 academic hours); and
- Radiation protection, Physics, Principle of Imaging/Imaging Management, Radiographic Photography Equipment, Computer in Radiography/Medical Informatics, Computed Tomography (each of not less than 20 academic hours)

Qualification attained should be comparable with local relevant BSc(Hons) Degree –
(a) with not less than 1,000 hours radiography-related clinical practicum; and
(b) comprise the following compulsory subject areas –
- Anatomy, Foundation Physiology, Pathology, Dosimetry, Radiotheraphy Treatment Planning, Equipment (each of not less than 30 academic hours); and
- Management of Cancer, Radiation Protection, Physics (each of not less than 20 academic hours)

* Applicants who enrol in studying the radiography programmes on or after 1 April 2016 are required to comply with the latest requirement as listed under Section II of (2) above.
Note 3 - “Contact hours” refer to lecture hours, laboratory hours and tutorial hours only.
Note 4 - “Radiography studies” include radiographic techniques, principle of imaging / imaging management, radiographic equipment and patient care.
Note 5 - “Specialties studies” include Ultrasonography, Medical Resonance Imaging, Vascular and Interventional Radiology, Mammography & Nuclear Medicine.
Note 6 - “RT studies” include dosimetry, RT planning, equipment, radiotherapy technique and patient care.
Note 7 - In view of the restrictions on practice as stipulated in the Supplementary Medical Professions Ordinance (Cap. 359, Laws of Hong Kong) and the Radiographers (Registration and Disciplinary Procedure) Regulation (Cap. 359 H), the experience obtained from Hong Kong must be under close personal supervision of a Part I diagnostic / therapeutic radiographer at all time and without violating the relevant Ordinance and Regulation such as by operating an irradiating or imaging apparatus. The applicant should submit a declaration form signed by the Part I diagnostic / therapeutic radiographer who has supervised his/her experience obtained from Hong Kong.
Registration under section 12(1)(c) of the SMPO
A person who, on the date on which section 12 commenced to apply to the radiographer profession (i.e. 1 July 1995), is practicing radiography but who do not possess any formal qualifications may apply for registration under section 12(1)(c) of the Ordinance. The Supplementary Medical Professions Council will consider each application and determine in which part of the register the name of the successful applicant shall be entered based on the applicant's education, training, professional experience and skill. Each application will be considered on its own merits.
